6 Different Types of Interior Doors

Door Type # 1 – Door with Hinges

A hinge is the term used for the mechanisms with which the door moves open and closed. It is the most frequent style of door used, allowing you to open the door toward the inside or the outside thanks to hinges attached on one side of the door frame. Moreover, you can choose which side of the frame to install the hinges, so that you can better adapt the door to your design.

A hinged door is a safe bet: it is also the most affordable system given how simple it is. Moreover, it is a versatile system that can handle the weight of both standard size doors and oversized doors.

The main disadvantage of a hinged door is the space needed to open the door. This can be problematic when it comes to smaller rooms or smaller apartments.

Style: Frameless Door

If you are looking for a modern door that will blend into your home décor, a frameless door is an ingenious choice. This system relies on an aluminum frame that is completely hidden from view, creating a modern and minimalist style. This is the ideal solution to gain more space on your walls or to camouflage certain doors like a door to your pantry, for example.

This will allow you to hide storage spaces from view and to avoid breaks in your interior design. Custom made interior doors without a visible frame will blend seamlessly into your interior design! Although this type of door might seem more complicated to install, this is not the case with Dörr Industries: installing an Integra frame is even quicker than a traditional frame, given that it is delivered to you already preassembled.

Contrary to a classic door with molded panels, a flush door does not have any moldings or motifs: it is perfectly flat. If you choose a frameless door to complete your minimalist or contemporary design, this type of door design is exactly the one you need to blend in seamlessly into your décor. For a successful minimalist design, opt for a flush door in the same colour as your walls. It is also possible to add a specific finish, to complete your design.

Door Type # 2 – Sliding Door

While a hinged door has the disadvantage of taking up space, a sliding door offers exactly the opposite! It is increasingly popular with homeowners given how much space it allows them to save. It is perfectly suited to spaces like wardrobes.

There are internal sliding door designs like pocket-doors, and external sliding doors as well; the latter does take up a certain amount of space on the wall when it is open. Another disadvantage of sliding doors is the unintentional “door slamming” effect. Advanced track systems like the Magic 2 system can remedy this issue thanks to the addition of silencers. This system also provides you with a silent sliding motion.

Style: Sliding French Doors

Sliding doors are a type of interior door design that is both elegant and practical. Often used to separate two rooms or to create a division within one room, it can easily be combined with French doors: this style will allow you to limit the loss of natural light flowing through your space.

Door Type # 3 – Pocket Door

A pocket door is part of the sliding door category; it opens thanks to a track system. These doors are the perfect option if you want to maximise your space, given that the tracks continue inside the wall. The doors disappear completely once open!

They are ideal for spaces that you would like to see completely open at times and closed at other times. This can be the case for rooms like the kitchen or the dining room, or when you want to divide a very large room. They are also an interesting alternative to external sliding doors when it comes to wardrobes.

Moreover, our custom-made sliding doors adapt to larger size single doors and double doors as well. A versatile option that adapts to a wide variety of styles!

The only disadvantage of this type of door is the more complex installation process. You will also have to ensure that your walls can welcome this type of system. No need to worry, you can easily follow our sliding door installation guide.

A Style to Try Out: Rustic

There are multiple possibilities with pocket doors, but let’s mention that larger size doors can become a focal point in your room. And why not opt for a stunning wood finish? There are different wood veneer options available to create the ideal rustic style for those who want to adopt this kind of interior design. At Dörr Industries, we offer different types of wood veneers, alongside more minimalist finishes, according to your taste.

Door Type # 4 – Swinging Doors

This type of door opens in one direction thanks to hinges installed on the door frame. It is a very popular choice, especially given that it is an inexpensive and versatile option. Just like a hinged door, it is easy to install and can open one way or the other.

On the other hand, it requires more space than a pocket door; you will have to plan for at least 1 m2 of space around the door. If you have limited space, this will infringe on that space.

Classic Style: Panel Door

Swinging doors offer several possibilities. If you are choosing this type of door for its classic and discreet style, then you cannot go wrong with a panel door; these moldings create a visual dimension within the door and a timeless design. Swinging doors can also be installed without a visible frame!

Door Type # 5 – Pivoting Door

Contrary to doors with fixed hinges installed in the frame, these doors work on a pivot located in the floor, at a vertical angle. The pivot can be positioned at the edge of the door or in the center. These doors open with hand pressure, in a pivoting motion. These models are a unique alternative to traditional doors.

A truly modern and decorative element, these doors, however, are not suitable for all environments. Firstly, it is not possible to close or open them completely. Secondly, they can also represent a more expensive option. But one thing is for sure: they add a unique touch to any room!

Style: A Door with a Bold Design

If you want to make this door a focal point, opt for a bold visual style like a door with a design. This way, it will become a decorative element in the room thanks to a unique visual effect that blends in with your overall design. Dare to be original!

Door Type # 6 – Folding/Accordion Door

Just like for sliding doors, folding doors are often preferred in tighter spaces like wardrobes, storage spaces and closets or cupboards. These are doors with two or several panels that fold together when the door is opened. Given that they require less space than a swing door, they are generally preferred in narrow spaces. Moreover, they help improve air flow.

On the other hand, this type of door also comes with its own set of significant disadvantages, like the fact that they require more effort to open and close. With this door model, the tracks also have a tendency to wear faster.

Style: Country Chic

Although this type of door can lend itself to different designs, the use of shutters is a widespread and popular style for folding doors. They will be the perfect addition to a country chic or coastal design.

What is the “core” part of a door?

The “core” simply refers to what the door is made of. It is the central part of the door, meaning the internal structure of the door. Generally, a door can either be solid or hollow.

Like its name indicates, a solid core refers to a door that is not hollow on the inside, while a hollow core has a central portion that is partially empty. The first is more solid and better insulated, while the second is more affordable and lighter.

How to choose between a hollow door and a solid door?

Everything depends on your needs: a solid door will be more expensive, but it will also be more durable and provide you with superior insulation. It is a better choice for rooms where you are looking for greater intimacy or a quieter atmosphere, like a bedroom or an office. It is also the ideal choice if you are looking for a superior quality and durable option.

If your budget is limited, a hollow door remains a good option for wardrobes or closets, for example. At Dörr Industries, with the Integra series, we offer a unique product, with 1 ¾’’- thick solid door options.
